“ What is Wagashi?”
Hirado was the place that was most exposed to western culture in Japan and the first place where sugar was imported from Europe. This gave Hirado its unique culture of ‘wagashi’: Japanese confectionary. Now, eastern and western culture will meet and cross in the modern days where we will present the unique wagashi culture that was formed through the blending of cultures.
What is wagashi? Wagashi is a world in which various stories, natural scenery and others things are expressed in the form of small and pure sweets that you can enjoy with all your five senses. It is a world where imagination and sensitivity intersect in their true form.
Wagashi are not just tangible sweets that you can just eat, they are also a concept. If you look at it that way you can see the crossing of cultures in them and the infinite possibilities of wagashi. If I’d have to simply explain about the common aspects of Wagashi and Art Jewelry, I would say that it is the cultivation and knowledge of the heart. In other words, I believe it is sensibility and sensitivity.
When the first westerners came to Japan some aspects of the culture they brought were adapted by the land and its people and remained there. This space and time might not last forever but this story will last in your heart.
Today, wagashi that was born out of exchange between East and West, will cross from Asia to Europe. With what will it fit together? And what will it bring forth? What aspects will it blend with to create new ripples across the sea?
