The Color of Banyan trees

まりちゃんのお家のガジュマルを頂きました。
彼女は果敢にも彼女のお家の屋根に登り、枝葉を切り集めます。
We received Banyan from around Mari’s house. She boldly climbs to the roof and gathers the branches and leaves.
ガジュマルの気根からは驚くような、ざくろのような美しい色が生まれました。
From aerial roots, a deep and indescribable feeling pomegranate red appeared
ガジュマルの原液で染めたいろ、美しいピンク
First, the silk is dipped firstly into the undiluted solution to dye. The color of Pink appears.

ガジュマルはとても力強い木です。その気根（根）は建物を破壊するほどの力があります。
また沖縄ではこの木にはこどもの精霊、キジムナーが住むと言われ、様々な物語が語られています。このガジュマルを染色に使うのは与那国の特徴です。
与那国では、与那国を敵から守った女性の巫女、サンアイイソバという女性の伝説があります。その女性の名前はこのガジュマルの名がついています。サンアイとはガジュマルのこと。このような力強い木ですが、そこから生まれるのは優しいベージュ・ピンクです。
見た目はとても強い木ですがそこから生まれるのは母なる色。母性のようなものを感じます。

染める工程はハイビスカスと同じです。まりちゃんのお家のガジュマルを頂きました。
彼女は果敢にも彼女のお家の屋根に登り、枝葉を切り集めます。
また、そのガジュマルの気根を後から加えて煮立て一晩おきました。
力仕事も女性が一人で行います。
今回の染色はハイビスカスから生まれた色２色、ガジュマルから生まれた色２色。これらを与那国の美しい青い海で仕上げに洗います。
まさに与那国で生まれた、命をいただき生まれた色たち。
ようやく色 を染める工程が終わり、人の仕事の本番、”織る”ということに入ります。
The color of the Banyan tree.
The Banyan is a very powerful tree. The aerial roots are strong enough to destroy buildings. There are many tales about the Banyan, the one of tales is a child spirit called Kijimuna who is said to live in these trees. Dyeing with these Banyan trees is a speciality of theYonaguni.
In Yonaguni, there is a legend of a priestess, a woman called “Sanai – Isoba”, who protected Yonaguni from its enemies. The woman’s name incorporates the word “Isoba” which means Banyan tree. Even though it is such a powerful tree, it gives birth to a very gentle and beautiful beige-pink color.
This time we boiled the Banyan root with branches overnight and a deep and indescribable feeling pomegranate red appeared and white silk threads became a coral pink.
The tree looks so powerful but the color that appears is like Mother Nature. I feel it is something like motherly power.
The dying process is the same as for Hibiscus. We received Banyan from around Mari’s house. She boldly climbs to the roof and gathers the branches and leaves. Later she added the aerial roots and left them to boil all together overnight. All of this hard work is done by one woman alone.
This time two colors were created from the Hibiscus and two from the Banyan. These are washed in the beautiful blue sea of Yonaguni to finish the process.These colors were born in Yonaguni, colors born from life. After the process of dyeing is finally finished, the real work begins: weaving.
