“acoya, The Koto Sea, Tales of the Pearl Sea”
Documentary
“acoya, The Koto Sea, Tales of the Pearl Sea”
”The Koto Sea, Tales of the Pearl Sea” is a project by acoya in the Koto Sea (Omura bay). A documentary of the project created by Nagasaki Cable Media will be broadcast in the near future. The Koto Sea in Nagasaki has been rich with pearls for more than 1900 years.
About three years ago I was fortunate to discover the bountiful history and began my research of Akoya pearl in Japan. I was firstly very surprised to learn about the deep stories that are connected with the mysteries of life, maternity and mythology ( A story of nature and humankind ) I felt this was something important that I should share by using the pearl as a metaphor for the beauty of Mother Nature and so I created project ‘acoya’.
I can imagine why Akoya in Japan has a kind of mystery about its past, due to its charm and mystique.
I met with a Mr. Matsuda who has been a cultivated pearl farmer in the Koto Sea his entire life, carrying on the tradition of his father.
He is a very knowledgable man and could truly be called a professor of pearls. Although very busy, Mr. Matsuda was welcoming and friendly and taught me many things about Akoya with a warm heart. If I had not met Mr. Matsuda, the ‘acoya’ project would not have been able to begin.
Ayato Takeda is a glass blower in RURIAN Glass studio in Nagasaki whom I met two years ago. The blue hand-blown glass is famous in Nagasaki and the glass itself symbolizes stories connected to the sea. Inspired by the glassworks I decided that I would like to create some beautiful pieces with pearl and glass made in Nagasaki that tell the story of Mother Nature and the sea. About one year ago Takeda-san and I went to Nagasaki cable media to present the acoya project. We met Mr. Ono, who is a media producer, and Mr. Morishita who is a creator, and shortly after, we began making a documentary about ‘acoya’ and the Koto Sea. This was another one of the important relationships to acoya.
Finally the documentary『acoya, the Koto Sea, Tales of the Pearl Sea』has been completed and will be broadcast on Nagasaki cable media in Nagasaki and Omura city.
These are just some of my activities about acoya, and additionally there are interviews of the professor and curator, stories of Philipp Franz von Siebold as well as amazing photography of the Koto Sea. Although I have not seen the documentary as yet, I would be very happy if you have time to watch it.
I hope you enjoy it.
