Matsuda pearl farm @ Kujūku Islands: Mr. Mastuda has taken so much care with the acoya project and I really appreciate his efforts and wish to thank him from the bottom of my heart.
It was a wonderful still day, very warm no hint of winter. It was so beautiful for sailing we visited at the Mr. Matsuda’s pearl hut floating out at sea. During the harvest season, they bring their lunch and spend whole day there. The last picture shows the clean pearls after washing them pearls with salt.
From the peak of the Reisui mountain. The view of the pearl sea below , and the islands of Hirado and Kujūku. it was so very beautiful but also quite remote, we were all alone there. Sadly the view was largely overshadowed by lots of yellow sand and airborn dust from China. On the left side, we could see the Mr. Matsuda’s island.
Kawaguchi Pearl farm: This farm is run by a couple, the husband is quite a character, his wife, busy and alert but always with a smile. The stuff are friendly too. When we visited there, they were working on packing scallops so we ate just salt of the sea and it was delicious. The location of the pearl farm is in a very calm, and secluded cove sounded by lovely landscape. Even in the such a location where the sea bring riches evenly, human fill in the shore with concrete and sea-life ecosystem is destroyed.
Human is in modern times act strangely toward nature, inflicting damage seemingly without care.
Ito Pearl farm:When we arrived the work of the day had almost finished. Sunset was quite early as the sun goes down very quickly in winter. After the sunset I saw an airplane track through the sky as it changed to pink. The area felt surrounded by thick silence…. Mr. Ito and Mr. Matsuda were discussing the condition of the pearls this year and the sky was so lovely with the color of the pink twilight. I grabed a handful of the pearls labelled ‘leave aside’ and we took pictures under the pink sky. The pearls seem magically alive in the sunset light.

freshly -harvest pearls
winter 2018
‘acoya’ will hold a special ordering event for Akoya pearls freshly harvested in the winter of 2018. December is the traditional harvest season and is called ‘ Hama-age’. It is said that pearls become most brilliant with cold of winter and in this such a cold atmosphere, the akoya farmers have worked silently. The fleshly- harvested pearls are moist with vitality and loveliness, each with unique color and form, a fortuitous life born from the sea. ‘acoya’ presents unique akoya pearls, each one a different type of life.
I would like to share with you some of their stories, so I will present “ A story of the pearls”on 22th Dec.2018.
Please attend to discover the treasures born in the sea of Nagasaki. I look forward to seeing you there!
