Both of crane (white) and tortoise ( hair stick) mean ” the sky and the earth”.
Kantsukasa spends all night to pray for god here.
The woman who works with god is called “Kantsukasa”.
This tradition exist on the south islands in Japan. ( Okinawa, Yaeyama, Miyako, Yonaguni) The woman wears special clothes and hair stick when they pray for god. The color of cloth and material of hair stick has a meaning. A cloth that is worn by Kantsukasa called ” Kan-Ishyo”, it’s a color of white. A color of white expresses a bird of Crane, it means it is the sky. A hair stick worn by Kantsukasa must be made from tortoise. Tortoise means that the ground, earth.
Both of crane and tortoise mean ” the sky and the earth”. The religion in Yaeyama is very different from main island of Japan. When we watch their history, it would be understood why the culture had been so mixed.
At this time, I watched the festival “Nishito Banhajiri” (西塘ばんはじり).
As the people has requested many things to the god over the entire year, the god has a note that is written the people’s wishes and hopes. So that Kantsukasa, she release god from their wish with thankful heart
That is why the last festival in a year is “Nishito-Banhajiri”(西塘ばんはじり) in Taketomi island.
